Welcome to Newport, Rhode Island!
Often called "America's First Resort," Newport was
founded in 1639, and soon became a bustling colonial seaport,
rivaling Boston and New York. Since then, Newport has undergone
many transformations; the town has been a major Navy port, a
summer escape for the elite of the gilded age, a mecca for sailors,
and today, a wonderful vacation destination.
During a quick walk around town, any visitor can observe all
of this rich history. America's Cup '12 Meter' Sailing Yachts
still grace the bay, while The
Preservation Society of Newport continues to maintain the
city's famous mansions.
